Customer Reviews For Valentine One Radar Detector

Had One Forever, Buying One for the Mrs.

I've had a Valentine 1 since the early 90's. Over the years, it has been upgraded and has consistently been a top performer. Since those early days, these new V1s offer laser, a reinforced power cord (fixing a former Con), slightly modified/improved interface (see Pros) and new detection capabilities for instant-on radar.

Pro:
-Incredible detection range that always amazes my passengers... consistently voted #1 in the rankings in laser and radar tests, usually only dinged for price (see Cons) or styling. (Are they serious? Who care's if it's boxy?)
-Able to track multiple targets at one time (9), which at first sounds silly, but it helps you filter threats. With other detectors you may think "I must have passed him by now" while with V1 you'll see that you've transitioned from 2 overlapping signals, one may be false one may be real.
-Able to tell that you've passed a target. Signal in front will shift to side lights and then to rear helping you ID where the signal is.
-Is he behind me? Front AND rear detectors I think makes this detector a one of a kind. Often gives you plenty of time to move over for him. Rear indicator light is super handy.
-Black color (unit, mounts and cables) blends into your dash and does not reflect as much light and glare as its shiny counterparts. I can't believe the competition has gone with the shiny titanium styling... silly!
-The longer power cord (four feet?) looks like a "phone cord" and is reinforced nicely, a vast improvement over the early V1 cords
-The shorter power cord (two feet?) is a coiled power cord... it is springy and has less slack than the longer cord supplied
-Also has pieces for hardwiring the unit, but I suspect you'll need to buy wire and an installer (not a typical do it yourselfer project)
-Comes with a mediocre visor mount, however the glass mount (with spare suction cups) is just awesome! After 15 years, the design is still unbeaten!
-Variable volume and mute settings, with one-touch mute (press once to switch from full volume to your preset muted volume). When new distinct threat is detected, audio alert is restored to full volume.
-Optional concealed display that plugs into the cigarette lighter (must be purchased separately)
-Display has one LED for each type of radar detected (laser, Ka, X, and K) supplementing the different audio beeps for each type (laser also has an additional visual warning as these are almost never false alarms and give you the least reaction time)
-Display will show a "J" when a signal is determined to be "junk", a false-alarm. When you get the "J" your V1 is telling you that it is retracting the warning from this signal.
-LEDs are arranged vertically, laser ("L") is on top, Ka next, then K, and last X, representing threats ranked from lowest (top LED) to highest probability (bottom LED) of a false alarm
-Nice muting feature that allows you to preset mute volume... Will return to full volume if muted and a new signal is detected
-You can buy spare pieces on-line (an extra cost, but reasonably priced)
-Lights are not overly bright at night... still very visible but not distracting either
-3 sensitivity settings: "all bogeys", "logic" and "advanced logic". Advanced logic filters the most for those who hate false alarms.
-Loudest setting is very loud, softest is off, with a nearly limitless number of levels in between. Mute can be any volume that you choose and does not necessarily have to be off

Con:
-EZPass (automatic electronic toll payment) sets off the laser warning, and the unit goes nuts (again the laser warning is intense). Also, laser can be triggered by close proximity (15' in my experience) of the tail lights to certain American-made cars when they hit their brakes (confirmed by the manual).
-Price... ouch
-Detectors aren't legal in some states/areas
-Some claim that's it's boxy styling is a turn off, but come on, it's all about having the best detection!
-Visor mount is not very good (too tight) on thicker sun visors
-L, Ka, X, and K next to their LEDs is stenciled on... at night it's hard to tell for instance if Ka is being located or X. There's no good reference and the letters are not illuminated.

Bottom line: Highly recommended/don't leave home without it. I liked mine so much that I have just bought another one for my wife.
I've tested all the top models...this is the hands-down winner

For years Valentine had Escort and the others completely trounced. Finally, with the X50, Escort came close to Valentine in some respects. Their new GPS detector the 9500i is also based on the 8500 X50 model. The thing is, Valentine keeps a commanding lead in four respects:
1. Yes, Escort now equals Valentine on K and Ka (but not X band); however, Valentine responds much better to instant on.
2. Valentine's laser detection is insanely good. No one comes close...and that's what you need with laser, because it is very hard to "spot."
3. Because of patent considerations, Escort can't have front and rear antennae on their unit and tell you what direction the radar is coming from. This is actually a VERY useful feature...and the rear antenna lets you know when a mobile instant on unit is creeping up behind you.
4. Valentine detects instant-on POP radar nearly 100% of the time. Escort just plain doesn't see it half the time.
I've driven with one since the mid 1990s, and never received a ticket while using it. It's the best investment you can make in driving peace of mind.
Peerless performance

Reviewer: Richard A. Megica,
I've had a Valentine One for four years and am preparing to order another one for our second car, since I've just had the first one hard-wired into our new one. The hands-down "winningest" features are the arrow system to tell you where the radars are and the "bogey counter" that tells you how many different signals the V1 is receiving. My wife is very impressed that the V1 can see so far down the road and over hills. Some reviews snipe at the V1's boxy styling. I didn't buy it to make a fashion statement. I bought it for its unmatched performance. There is a very nifty option: a small lightweight plastic block called a "concealed display" that has the direction lights, type-of-radar lights, and a mute on/off button. I velcro-mount it to my steering wheel column near the dash, so I don't have to look up to see what's going on (my V1 is near the roofline). Think about how much a ticket would cost, adding in risk of an insurance premium increase. The V1 is the way to go. Recommend that if you hard-wire the unit, you have the tech leave the in-line fuse exposed or at least easy-to-access.
Arrows are a huge help!

Anyone that does any research on radar/laser detectors knows two things, a cheap one is worthless, and the Valentine V1 is always listed in as a top 2 detectors. Some people complain that it is over sensitive, but you can just switch it to Advanced Logic Mode (big L on the screen) and it will be quiet enough. This thing is super sensitive on the highway and can give you a solid 2 miles of warning if the officer has the gun on. Arrows help a ton in the city and it will tell you the direct of the strongest signal as well as the other signals simultaneously.
it can't get any better

i did about 3 weeks of research and more thinking than i should have put into a radar detector purchase...but after using this unit...it was well worth it...there isnt a single thing i would change about this unit...it tells you where the signal is coming from...which has saved me SOOOO MANY TIMES...it tells you what band, how many signals, and it even detects Ku and POP...this might be the most expensive radar detector, but until you own one...you can't truly comprehend how vastly superior it is to all other brands and models,... my V1 has paid for its self many times over...esp on my road trip to and from nashville (i live in the harrisburg, pa area)...most people i know arent willing to pay the price for this unit...but the thing is...you can buy a crappy cheaper detector...and then in a couple years when new technology comes out you have to buy a new one...and so on and so forth...before you know it...you've spent more than you ever planned on...with the V1...if theres new technology...you send it in for an upgrade...the upgrade for the models that are one model older than mine is $85...which is cheaper than even the best low priced detectors....so how is this not worth it???

There are many times last year I really need a traffic ticket (and not had them), after a cop pulled me over. Here's what to do to avoid a ticket, even if I did something wrong.

Their main task is to help the police officer feel safe. His work is very dangerous, and who will appreciate your effort. The whole process works best when the officer shows his anxiety reduction in all possible ways. Here's why …

1 Your goal is to look at all like your brother, the police officer have been thoroughly trained on exactly how to behave in a traffic jam, (if you're not a brother really wanted). He did not Spook Your "brother" not to try to "solve this card so often there will be a single label.

2. You can get suddenly surprised by a police car, while you are in violation of the law. Rather than turn her face away or'm afraid that you run with, and the wave in a friendly way, as if to greet a friend. He may think she is a person who knows, maybe a second police officer, and you can ignore. Indeed, it seems a cop is a felony with a prison.

3. If you get pulled over, quickly and easily get away from the road, but try to avoid private property. Trying to stop in a place that is well lit and easilyvisible from the road again for her safety. Give him plenty of room, away from moving traffic. Turn off everything. If the worst happens and your car should be seized, placed so the driver can get to sleep in the car without injury. Things like this, you can adapt the description of a man who has committed a serious crime, or an arrest warrant, no one even knew about the country you are in prison, and they need the car takes. Some states (Ohio, for example) to stopyou or collect the whole gang in place to stop for a quick quote.

4 Turn on your inner light after dark, tinted windows roll down, and if you have one, so you can easily see everything inside the car. E 'of fundamental importance. You should do everything we can to make him feel that you are a foreigner, but not a threat.

5 both hands grasping the top of the wheel at all times, when we see easily from a distance. Not afraid or nervous. Will do. This man will treat you kindly because he believed that your brother is a policeman, as evidenced by your actions, not because she said yes. Be gentle with him. Do not park your car unless directed to do so. Do not argue, just do what they tell you to be happy and to meet every request. The employee is your new friend, because he has escaped with a warning, not a ticket. The less said the better. Use"Yes, sir" and "No" can only help.

6. Let your belt. Brief passengers not to talk in any way, unless the officer speaks directly to them first. So you can have full control at all times. Passengers Adults have their hands open, palms up, in their laps, before the eyes of all time.

7. Very important. Describe verbally what you do with your hands before you move it, ask permission to move, andmoves slowly getting OK. For example, to allow the requested license, said: "My driving is in my left pocket. I took with my left hand. Is that OK?" The other hand on the wheel. Ideally, you should make your documents in your glove compartment or center console, not saving. E 'a favorite place for people to hide a gun and put her hand inside to make a very nervous policeman. Do you want itnervous system.

8. Do not lie about something you can see, because we'll see. (Your opinion on the use to load.) When asked if you know the reason for which they were brought up, you might consider, "I'm not sure – I drive safely, "unless it is clear you are deliberately doing something wrong. Answer the questions honestly, clearly and succinctly. Police can read better understand. If you ask: "When was the last timeGot a ticket? "tell the truth. He will do everything in his driving record in a few seconds to know in every case.

9 look at the official face. Take sunglasses or a hat, so you can face. It is easier for everyone to do with an alien evil, if you've never seen in his eyes, in contact with him. He is trained to look for signs that you are drunk or embarrassment, and his sunglasses in his path. If you can not get to look into the eyes looking up, notthe nose between the eyes. Do not be afraid. Handle it as you will act in a bank deposit, emotion less, easily and quickly. Be strong and experienced. Not groped for maneuver or affect him, he is not stupid. Treat him with respect. All those things are hoped to generate sympathy – I was too late, it is an emergency situation, so I signed, I can not create a brand that can afford it, I fought with my wife, I need a bath, etc. Only make him angry. He listened to all 100 timesbefore.

10. When you send in your path, you must remember to thank him for leaving the street. It 'was a very dangerous task, and you may also need your help for a couple of miles of roads.

Extra Credit Suggestions

Police officers on limited access highways and toll roads do not want to drive miles to the upcoming release of an arrestee in the back seat is not. If they need help, do what they want to be in the middle of nowhere, no. Yes, they tend to parkSearch Accelerator in two or three miles before and after a year. If the local unit of routine 80 kmh, then suddenly slow to 70 and pull into the right lane when you come to a junction, take a hint to follow their example.

Extra, Extra Credit Tips

What is the safest way to go somewhere? Just stay as far away as possible from all other vehicles. The farther you are from other drivers (especially trucks), the fewer problems you have. You can not collide with the thinair, or run headlong into a piece of waste thrown into the quarter mil for you. You'll be surprised how relaxed you are when you have "only" cars on the road. The disadvantage is that if the speed is easier to travel because there is the 'crowd' to hide Avoid this by simply finding a big hole in traffic, with many miles of the quarter car in front of you and behind you, but without driving near you. police radar has an alarm that is activated by an officer, and heput it only slightly above the speed of all cars to prevent the clock, so be careful when you go to see what the machine generates. Until you travel a lot faster than most of the traffic, you must be a problem.

Daytime running lights (headlights that turn on automatically when the engine is running) is the best feature on roads today because they help other drivers see better. If your car has them, make sure it is enabledSome may be turned off completely.

Always remember two things: if the speed, and are involved in a collision, always guilty, because legally you are looking for speed, regardless of what others have or not. It also includes the insurance does not cover that in case of negligence (read the fine print) if something has been negligent (such as speed) and find someone that badly, you can not pay for everything from his own pocket, even iftake the rest of your life. Your radar detector will not help you here.

Sometimes the staff can still write a ticket, but to a much lesser offenses not involving points. After that I, of course, rolled through a stop sign, an officer gave me a ticket for a parking lot where I pulled up. No tags. I like to pay. Consideration of a more serious law breaking down as one of the ticket, he was still let go easily. Thanksbecause you want to see him. Nobody should, he should remember.

The officer may have his head, which is not only out there to show their sleep. Once I was obviously looking 60 years in an area 45 in the middle of the night. My registration was in the suitcase, but he told me not to receive. Instead of a ticket for speeding have been issued to a non-registration of a "closed" the label, and I had three days to "find" not. This label has just left.

I can not remember being pulled up theat least five times more and get something more than counseling caution while driving. (Guido slower now.) Do not drink alcohol much, but when I was caught in a 70 speed zone 55 only after drinking half a bottle of wine for dinner! Without a ticket, short, friendly conversation with the officer about where you go to school. These things.

To summarize: get away from the pad, ceiling lights after dark, tinted windows down, hands on the wheelno sudden movements, honest answer, ask for permission to move his hands, remain calm and polite, the passengers calm and not threatening. Every single thing that should not be in danger and calm.
The next section explains how you can have more than one ticket you get and you want to fight him. Reviewing some research on Google. For example, a court in Chicago has dismissed all laser acceleration card, when required, because there's a hole in their system. Do not ask, and you must pay.

Googlealso help you find, download eBooks that will pass through the evaluation of the case in court. Just search for "how to beat a ticket" and make sure that some of the sources. Typical of $ 20 to $ 40 You Get Enough legal information legally beat your ticket. If you can lose your license or go to jail the best for a good lawyer who specializes in your problem and have a good track record to find.

First, while in the car, do not suggest that you should fight for the ticketor go to court. To say the least. You want the officer to believe that they do not want to appear in court so that he could not prepare properly. You can also ask if you can only use the card by mail with a check sent.

If you have an emergency ticket, do a Google search for "ticket beat faster" and spends about $ 20 – $ 40 for a download, satisfaction-guaranteed e-book, which will give you the details. Basically, you learn that a large part of the preparation, calibration, paperwork isdocumentation and testing occurs before a police car can stop the accelerator, with a very different rigamarole to follow.

Once in court, you may ask to see that all the paperwork and documentation. Since no one else knows enough to ask what we often do not bother to take him to court. Why is not there, his case is incomplete, and often it is possible your case thrown out. If you want to tip his hand stupid, saying: "I will see to appear in court or inright with a folder full of notes, you must have sufficient time to collect all the documents before your case is called, and you lose.

If you are caught quickly or run a red light at an automatic camera, you may be able to fight and win that too. Do a search on Google. Not all of these devices operate in the way they are supposed to.

In the meantime, always respect the law and save a lot of pain. If you think you have been unjustly accused, there are resources available foryou.

My favorite law-breaker is … A driver in the turn lane on a road uniform that would take a little 'backward linkages' of a door across the street. "One Way" signs are there, the "left turn only sign there, the figures are only a small thing. Instead of turning left, we would question the right to reach the entrance to the mall (or the side of the road or hamburger joint or otherwise). This is truly a thing of beauty.

Ignore the one-way signsticket number is 1 (You can back up 60 feet in one direction, but not go forward.) Ignore the left turn only sign the ticket number 2. When you have a car and broke two laws at the same time , it is considered reckless driving "ticket number for the 3 points on his license will quickly rack.'s insurance rates will rise to $ 1,000 a year for 3 years. The fines will be more than $ 500. Total cost of at least $ 3500.

I takelong way round, please.
